I am looking for a rebuild kit. Anyone know where I can get one? I may just have to buy the parts individually. I have a highly polished alt case that I want to rebuild and use.
I have rebuilt mine 2 times, I get the kit at Checker
(CSK, KRAGEN, SCHUCKS)
comes with volt. reg, brushes, brgs, heatsink and diodes
heres the hot tip: go buy an alternator at the wrecking yard for $50 or less out of a BUICK. switch the cases, your done
I repaired mine with a kit from Autozone and it worked great when switching to a chrome case. Mine did not come with the voltage regulator though. I bought that seperately elsewhere.
get the same CSI style alternator as yours with the same amp rating
the only difference is where the mounting lugs are on the case. since you are gonna throw that away anyway, it doesn't matter where the lugs are.
oh, and the pulley is a bonus. the pulleys may be of different size, you can even try that pulley on your car to see if you get a little less drag by using a slightly larger diameter pulley you got for FREE
when you bought an alternator that comes with stuff you were gonna throw out anyways. and still get your alternator to charge sufficiently at idle.
some buicks (and other GM cars) are low speed engines, and some are higher speed (v-6's and 4 cyls) and have to rev a little higher to get into their power band. GM engineering changes the pulleys on alternators, and power steering , smog pumps, and crank pulleys to compensate for the varied speeds. you may just luck out with a pulley you can use. and if you end up with pulley spacers, you can align your pulleys if there's any kind of misalignment that you can detect.
(you are going to take both apart anyway)

when pulling your (new one) and your old one apart, any rebuilt alternator that has wire extenders on the stator windings are to be considered not good enough.
the rebuild houses dike off the wires to save time, and splice on new ends. the splice creates resistance, and causes the wires to heat up, and causes the alternator internal regulator to fail
