I found a guy near where i live that owns a race equipment shop that said he will install a 4 point roll bar thats 1 5/8 in thick crome molly and was going to charge me $800 installed. just wanted to know what you all think. i personally thought that was a little steep.
Locally (hudson valley ny) I was quoted $3500 for an 8 point with swing out door sections. Now that is steep.
Needless to say I'm not getting it done there.
Anyone have any experience or pics of a S&W racecar cage installed?

$3500? is that guys on drugs? I doublt he will get any customer go for that kind price.
I got a 8 points with swing out from S&W racecar. But we choose to use only 6 points.
$800 for a CM 4 point TIG welded in is about average. Seems like it's roughly the going rate for a 4 pt.CM.
I am doing a CM one myself and it's alot of work!

I first got a mild steel 12 point from them. MS weighs alot. Scott Weney(company owner) sent me these pics of their road race style(???) version:
ummm....it's probably not the most common way to do install it, but it's a way. <shrug> I know they can do better, they do top alcohol funny car chassis(Newberry) and dragsters, etc etc....

That one doesn't appear to attatch to the frame anywhere!
Remember Chromoly is more expensive than mild steel
thats true, i think im going to go with. it he is booked 2 weaks in advance but i will post some pics when its all done. one other question that price he gave does not include getting it painted do you all think i should spend a little more and have them spray it also?

I would have them paint as well. Since they will have most of the interior out anyway for teh install, might as well get it done so you won't have to worry about it later.
i thought so what is the min 1 3/4? for rollbars and cages right? i will have to talk to the guy and see what he can do for me
thanks
For NHRA, all except for the cross brace, the tubing must be 1 3/4" O.D. x .118" wall, mild steel or 1 3/4" O.D. x .065" wall, 4130 chromoly. Also for a roll BAR NHRA specifies a minimum of 5 points. A roll CAGE is a whole other animal.
NHRA specs
ROLL BARS must be constructed out of 1 3/4 mild steel .118 min thick, or 1 3/4 chromoly .083 min thick.
ROLL CAGES can be constructed out of 1 5/8 mild (.118) or chromoly (.083).
X braces and cross bars can be made with different sizes (1 1/2, 1 1/4), its the main hoop, rear support bars, halo, and A pillar bars that are required to be the larger dia tubes.

Guys remember what the purpose of the bar is and know what the standard are for the type of racing your looking to do. Then find a shop or someone knowledge with those rules and the talent to install the bar the proper way.
Then you will get your money worth.
