I think any large(427-454) SBC is outragiously wonderful. Plus, it will provide a terrific base if/when you really decide to pump it up.
The only reason I stayed with a 406 in mine was I need to pass Ca smog every other year and so I am limited on the available EO# cylinder heads and cam. I could not bear to strangle that 427+ bad boy.
I'm really liking the World Products Motown block, you can get a 427 or a 454 in this one. A 4" stroke crank can be used in this block without any clearancing.
I'm retty sure this is what I'll be using in my car when the time comes.
There is an individual on this forum that is now running the 450cid engine. He was running a 421, but swapped the components of the shortblock and ported his AFR 220 heads and it is now back together. He says that it feels like the old 421 with an extra 100 shot.
His car was already well into the 9s (9.80s, I believe), so this will be interesting to see th results come springtime.

That would be me. The torque of these big cubes are awesome. With more cam, more compression, improved airflow, and the extra cubes, it does feel like my old motor with a 100 shot.
Also, it still has a ported miniram on it.
