Thermostat Change
Greetings,
My '93 coupe gets too hot in traffic. I want to change to the 160 degree thermostat. When changing the thermo, do you have to go with the Hypertech Power Chip/Hypertech Powerstat or can you just change the stock thermo with another GM Stock thermo rated at 160 degrees??
Thanx,
RailroadMo

You MUST have Hypertech, they sell such high quality parts its a no brainer

Any GM 160 thermo will work, youll save about 2 or 3 dollars by NOT buying the hypertech.

If you are changing your thermostat you need to get the programmer to change your fans set temps or you will not be accomplishing much.

Hypertech or not the 160 thermostat along with earlier fan activation will make a big difference in temps. Also look at a manual fan operation switch so you can turn the fans on and off at will. :seeya

Re: Thermostat Change (railroadMo)
Just to clarify one point, you need to use a thermo designed for an LT1 engine. The LT1 water pump design is quite different from the traditional SBC water pump.
As stated above, without a re-program or a fan switch, a thermostat won't do a whole lot. Has no real effect once the engine is warmed up.

Im in the same boat with my 93. I bought the hypertech t-stat. (couldnt find anyone else who made the LT1 T-Stat in a 160 version) I have not done anything with the fans yet, since I cant find anyone who makes a switch (auto style, no manual switch) for the 93. It seems these are unique, first being a LT1, then being in 94 and up they use a programer to change fan speeds. I believe we will have to use a new chip, which can also change TC lock up to a higher MPH. (a added bonus) Im looking at Ed Wright chips. They seem to have a high satisfaction rate on this forum. Good luck.

I believe the Auto switch would be a chip or in the LT1s case Power programmer I could be wrong since thats not my years But I would think....

From my understanding from hypertech, they told me to pass smog i needed the thermomaster chip because the stock would create problems during the test, also problems running under normal driving conditions. Needless to say i have the chip, need to pass smog out here. runs great and it is my daily driver in commute traffic out here. runs 175-180 when sitting still in traffice 165 when driving.
