I got in the car today after it has sat since Sunday. It cranked and caught for a second then would crank but not start. A check of fuel pressure shows zero. My service manual shows two relays behind the battery. Those are the MAF relays. What the book shows as the fuel pump relay is two piggybacked on the firewall to the left of the Brake booster. Well I only have one relay there. But I do have two relays mounted to the wheel well just below the master cylinder that aren't shown in the book.
Anybody know which is the fuel pump relay? The two on the wheel well are the ones throwing me a curve...
This is a pic of the fuel pump relay. On a 4+3 tranny there are two in this location and they are the same relay and are interchangable. The two behind the battery are the power and burn off relays for the MAF. Fan relay is on the inner fender.
If you have no fuel pressure, use a jumper wire from the + side of the battery to terminal G of the ALDL. This will send 12v directly to the fuel pump. If it builds pressure then you know it's working. For the fuel pump relay...when you turn the key "on" you should hear a humm for 2 seconds. If not and terminal G get 12v to the pump...you can use a short jumper wire and take the fuel pump relay off and insert one end of the wire in the first terminal and the other end in the last terminal of the connector. This will bypass what the fuel pump relay does and will tell you if the relay is good or bad.
Jumper from battery to the "G" terminal and I got enough fuel pressure to pull it back inside the garage. It would run as long as I kept giving it gas but died when I let off the pedal. It's looking like the relay after all...........
Use a fuel pressure guage to see what the psi is. As far as having to hold the throttle down...try and disconnect the MAF and see if it will idle on it's own. Don't forget to jump the fuel pump relay connector as described to make sure the relay is indeed bad.
Well it was after all the relay and it's a single relay on the firewall so I guess my OD relay is one of the two on the wheel well. Thanks gentlemen for the usual on target assisstance.....
