Default New intake help

I am buying a whole new intake for my tpi 1986. The intake is a edelbrock hi-flow base plate, the runners are slp, the planum is stock but ported, and the throttle body is 52mm. My question is, which i am sure has been answered many times, that if I bolt this on will I need a new prom for my computer or anything else for that matter or can I just bolt all this on at once and go. Thanks for your input.

It will bolt on and run just fine in your 86. I had a similar combo for many years and ran the factory tuning.

It also has 30 lb injectors. I can leave those off if I have to to not have to get a new prom. Also where should I get a prom if I need one?

You snuck in the 30# injector part on me .
In my opinion, that is a ton of injector for a stock motor with a mild intake package. I hereby withdraw my earlier comments. I would assume that tuning would be required to make those larger injectors work.

The 30 lb injector IS a bit much. In the case of installing these...yes you will need a chip tune. I wouldn't suggest this and would go with stock 22lb injectors for now. You can use the 24 lb injectors without a tune from what I hear, but you will need to get a AFPR to help compensate for the 22lb injector constant in the stock chip.

Pcmforless can tune a piggyback adapter that goes between the ECM and stock chip, so you can keep the stock chip.

If it was me I would stay with the stock injectors.
Also, while the induction system is off, it would be a good time to pull the heads and cam...port the heads to suit the intake, and install a cam to suit all of the above.
Not too sure you're going to need the 52tb though.
I am not convinced that a chip tune is necessary with what you plan to do, esp. if staying with stock injectors.
I have just finished doing a head, cam, ported tpi job on an 88, with stock chip and injectors. It runs real clean..
I did the same thing on my 87 a year ago and have a mail-order chip in it, with stock injectors. It runs rich at idle and low rpm's.
Both go quite well and pull hard to 5000rpm.
Neither has been on a dyno yet.
That would tell the true story, but so far, SOTP feel indicates a tune is a "maybe"...

im not very good with cams. What size cam should I get and what kind do you recommend? Will the new cam require a tune?

Could I do without the cam or would the stock cam cancel out everything I've done up top?

yes, a cam is not required for what you have... you're not gaining alot with that setup as it is anyway... 48mm tb will work best along with stock injectors, no chip program is required, and no AFR is needed.

If you haven't bought this setup yet, I wouldn't. You'll be lucky to see 15rwhp. You will get more SOTPs from a set of underdrive pulleys and probably be quicker with the pulleys as well.

I thought that the best horsepower gains for the l98 was in the air intake because it needed it badly. I've heard that letting the l98 breath is the best thing to do. I am getting the heads ported and polished, wont that and this intake help a lot?

Your original plan seems fine to me except the TB upgrade and injectors seems unnecessary. Since you are eliminating cats have you looked at the dual system from CC? It is cost effective and you can add your choice of mufflers or eliminators. You can get even more gains with some good headers.

Im looking to spend about 700 to 1000 on things besides the cat and mufflers. What kind of headers do you recommend? They seem like a hard job if switching to long tube. So far I have heard underdrive pulleys and headers. What about a complete port and polish from pleanum to exhaust? Can that money and the exhaust get me 70 hp to get anywhere near 300 "flywheel" horsepower.
