At some point in the future I will probably need to replace the main catalytic converter on my '89 and want to scope out a replacement now, before the need arises. I would love to try one from Random Technologies, BUT the price is way too steep. Does anyone know where you can get one at a discount or, failing that, what is a good alternative high flow converter?

I bought a Magnaflow (Carsound) universal main cat for my 1989 this year for $60 new on ebay. I believe Summit has them for under $70 with the air tube.
I had it welded on and kept the air sensor working. I am very pleased and the car gets better gas milage. (I think it has a bit more power as well).
Please fill out your profile it will help answer questions.

I bought this for my car but I'm having a hard time finding a muffler shop to put it on. They all say its messing with the emissions and they want no part of it ( it doesn't have A.I.R plumbing on it ) . I just ended up gutting mine original and will probably post the one I bought on the for sale section here . Just giving you a heads up on my experience with this one . If you do your own exhaust work or have a friend that can help U it wont be much of a problem .
The previous owner of my 86 told me the main cat is hollow. I just purchased a high flow Catco converter w/air tube, off Ebay for $50 total (shipping and all). They sell different sizes as well.
