Default Transmission Woes

I am running an A4 '95

So some of you may remember I was having sudden problems with my transmission on my way back home about a week ago. Well, I finally got it to a shop to have it looked at, and they decided they were gonna try and replace the 2-3 shift solenoid.

258 bucks later that didnt work.

So now they are telling me since that was my only shot the only thing left is a transmission rebuild. Now I know this has been discussed a bunch so I will keep the question simple. They suggested I put in a "Jasper" tranny, which would run me about 2k bucks. Apparently it is almost the same cost as the GM ordered tranny but with a better warranty.

The tranny itself is 2k, and labor is 600, plus tax comes out to about 2800 bucks total . Does this sound about right? Is there anything special to this Jasper tranny compared to others? How about what OTHER trannies are there? I am going to rebuild in a few months after I save up some money for the best option and Id really like to hear what my options are

thanks guys

when i checked on a gm unit it was like 1800 with converter and a decent warranty. jasper stuff seems to be good as far as i can tell. also check with petek he can build you one with a higher stall for about the same money

GM now gives a 36 month 100k warr. (which also includes labor if taken to a GM approved service center/dealer) on their replacement trannys, I don't see how Jasper can be better than that.

One of Pete's would definintely be the way to go.
I do know for a fact though that the GM trans do have a 36/100k warr now, it just started in the past year.

When I asked what the difference was, the guy who I was talkin to said that GM would probably send me a Jasper system

Maybe that has something to do with it?

Could be. Just be careful. For that kind of money, make sure you are getting a Corvette spec transmission. Do you have a special relationship with this shop? There ought to be a competent trans shop in the area that can custom rebuild yours, which gives you a greater reassurance that you end up with a "Corvette" transmission. I wouldn't hesitate, for a second, to go with a Pete K trans, but with the distance involved, the freight will kill you. The GM and the Jasper, both, ought to be good units, they, too are a bit pricey.

RACE ON!!!

well I am aiming for about 2k or less on the tranny, but it doesnt look like I have any cheaper (but quality) options. It was mentioned that his tranny would have a higher stall, what would that do for me?

And as far as the shop is concerned, I dont have a particularly special relationship with them, but they are primarily a performance and racing specialist, I trust em. Specialize in vipers, so there are always lots hanging around, pretty cool to visit.

I'd be tempted to try and find a reputable tranny shop in your area the could rebuild yours to your liking (making sure they rebuild yours and don't just slap a shelf unit in there , as CFI said there are some components in your trans specific to Vettes). A good shop should be able to do this and keep you around $2k with a decent converter.

EDIT:

I took the previously mentioned advice and finally talked with the good guys down at corvettes of auburn, who suggested heartily I do a rebuild instead of a replacement. Said it would run me about 1900+ tax TOTAL. Comes with a 12 month warranty, so its 2 years less warranty @ $1000 cheaper... worth it?

Hell.. as long as he is pullin out the exhaust, and saving me a grand, might as well put a nice corsa in there..
