With an 86 4+3 car, I'd say your choices are limited.

An 87-88 4+3 bin would be preffered for the 160/8192 baud diagnostics, but your 86 4+3 lacks the first gear switch.

The 87-88 bins don't have first gear detection logic like the 86 bins do.

The 87-88 bins also have some improvements in the timing tables, things like an additional WOT spark advance table which can be handy, and elimination of the cold spark subtraction, and coolant temp compensation.

This leads to a couple of possiblities.
  • Stick with an 86 aluminum head 4+3 bin.
  • Upgrade to an 87-88 4+3 bin, and add the 1st gear switch or live with od available in 1st gear, or patch the 1st gear detection logic from an 86 bin into an 87-88 bin.
  • Upgrade to an 89 bin and patch in the 4+3 logic, this is probably the most difficult choice to implement.

I would probably start with an 87-88 4+3 bin like ABTR, ABTP, ABTZ, ABTU, etc. and live with or tune around the 1st gear od behavior. I don't think I'd go through the trouble of adding the 1st gear switch.

Which od do you have MK2 (0.68) or MH5 (0.62)? This changes a couple of parameters for 4th gear detection and 1st gear look ahead ok tps setting. I use ABTR which is for an 88 4+3 MH5 bin.

No CSV is not a problem since the crank fueling can be compensated.

MH5 OD. I'm not worried about the 1st gear OD thing. I only use OD on the highway and want to eliminate the auto OD that the factory prom has.
I need to do some more reading

Whats the scoop on your build. Maybe your bin and definitions would be a good starting point for me.

Dan,

Shoot me an e-mail address via PM and I can send you some bins and definition files that will permit 4+3 editing.

I'll also work up a bin based on what I'm currently running with o/d off be default, but with changes for your gears (3.07 I presume), stock injectors and MAF, which differ from my car. I'll back off on the spark a bit also since you have increased compression. 200 on/180 off ok for fans? 850 idle rpm?
