Default Voltage jumping all over

What would cause the voltage readout to jump all over the place? I had the car out and noticed that the digital readout was jumping from 13.8-15.2 and everywhere in between....never holding constant.

Everything was working fine otherwise, btw.

I have been reading up on that. Possibly a short somewhere but not guaranteeing that.

Bad voltage regulator (in alternator) could cause it.

Verify with another voltmeter across the battery terminals and across the alternator output terminal. If so, check for tight connection on the alternator output and on the jump start terminal in back of the battery (if your year has one). Could be defective fusible link in the alternator output wire, connect a jumper wire from the alternator to the battery + terminal and see if the voltage jumping stops. Spray some electrical contact cleaner on the terminals on the alternator wiring harness plug. Brushes at the end of their life can cause your symptoms as well as a defective voltage regulator and a parts store test will reveal this.
