Default Transmission problems need help

I noticed that my trans. was running hot so I checked the fluid and noticed it smelled burnt. So, I had had the trans. flushed and the filter changed, but it still runs hot and the fluid smells burnt again. There is no other problems what could cause this. I want to fix this problem before it becomes a bigger problem. What could it be where do I start?????????

Are we talking standard or auto trans, and what year? Are we talking about the '87 in your profile?

Pete K is the resident transmission expert, and is quite helpful. You might drop him a PM.

But based upon personal experience, it sounds like the clutches are done for. Plan on a full rebuild. You say the fluid smells burnt....what color is it? In my case, the fluid turned kind of a chocolate brown and first gear started slipping badly.

Sorry, I know this probably wasn't what you wanted to hear.

It's an auto. The fluid was a brownish color before it was changed. No gears are slipping. When it was flush they said there wasn't any clutches material in the fluid.

Is the lock up working? No lock up will raise temps quite a bit. You could also try flushing the cooler to se if there is a blockage.

Are talking about the cooler in the the radiator?. I just replaced the radiator last month. When it was flushed they said they weren't sure if the convertor was locking up.

They also said they could install a 2400 stall torque converter for 425-450 does this sound like a good price. I know I'll have install a cooler also, but I'll do that myself because they said that it could be $500 plus because of all the work involved

This link will describe how to check lock up. If the converter is not locking up, troubleshoot it before swapping the conveter. Are they going to supply and install a torque converter for $450?.The place that build my converters charges me $300 for a lock up, custom stalled 12 inch converter. In my opinion, this is a fair price. You can spend more and you can spend less, but be sure you buy a quality converter if you decide to change it. B&M and TCI are 2 brands to avoid(in my opinion)

Thanks for the help. It's the owner of an Aamco that gave me that price
