I've got a problem I'd like some opinions on. The other day I went to start the car and nothing. Turned the key a second time and the power comes on (radio, door dinger only, no dash lights). Turned the key to the off position and the radio stayed on. VATS is definitely not a problem because ever since I've owned the car (6yrs) the orange wires have been cut. So I'm assuming it was bypassed some how. The steering tilt column recently has become terrible from wear and about the same time my dimmer switch doesn't work. I know that particular switch uses a mechanical rod to actuate the switch because it was a PIA to get back into place when I replaced the multi-function switch in the column. Also I can't get the car out of PARK so I'm stuck working on it in the street. Finally down to the question. Is the ignition switch the problem? Or am I missing something else?
For all those that have looked at the thread and were interested, I just finished tearing down the WHOLE steering column. Turns out the steering column support assembly was broken where the tilt pin goes through. This allowed the ignition switch engagement rod to seperate just far enough to not actuate. Now its off to the net to find a replacement.
Found the part (used) and had it shipped 2-day air from Arts Corvette Parts. PIA putting it back together because of the #*%!*@%!!!! tilt wheel spring. Would have been nice to have a bench vise to hold the column. But hey, a little blood, sweat and tears is good for you, right?! Cured the problem. Went ahead and replaced the Ignition Switch and Lock Cylinder so hopefully I NEVER EVER have to drop the steering Column again!! If anyone wants to do this and needs some advice let me know. Steering Column Support: $75 Ignition parts: $80 Labor: 2 busted knuckles and a lot of swearing. Driving the vette to work instead of the mini van: PRICELESS!
