the difference is in the entire unit.

the D36 is a 7.5" ring gear, and the D44 has a 8.5" ring gear.

much of the info you want is in the C4 Tech FAQ. It's a sticky at the top of the page.

they are NOT cheap - about $1500~$2000.

And that's usually just the center section (Pumpkin)! If it's out of the more desireable 89 up ZF-6 cars w/3:4x's. The 4+3's have 3:08's and slightly weaker cases, and can be ususally found alot cheaper.

funny. i had no clue the general changed the D44 from the 88 model year to the 89 model year. i have seen both out of the car, and they looks entirely the same. are you sure about this?

I agree, this is very new information. I have never heard of a change to the D44 case.

The price I quoted above includes the batwing (the cover and mount).

The early D44 cases are a good bit stronger than the later cases. Jeb had a post with pics showing the different cases.
The early case weighs 4-5 lbs more than the later case. If you just look at it visually, it's a much more brutish case. I think the change over year is 89.
My 90 case was definitely thinner than the 85-88 case. I've broken a 90 and 92 case, never broke the earlier case. In fact, the 85-88 case looks as stout as the custom case.

I guess so, at least as far as 3:08 vs 3:07's. And quite possibly the relative strength between the two case, I was always told the change was for more strength. I stand corrected. As far a price goes, I can get the earlier ones for about $750-$1000 for the center section which DOES include the "bat wing" ($400 -$750 for a "bat wing" if you have to buy one seperately), Most people want the 3:4x (there are several different ones if you want to be technical) gear ratio and are quite prepared to pay more for them. Yes I've gotten them ALOt cheaper, but I can sell them for that all day long.

The Spider gears and clutch packs are also weak.

The gears themselves are smaller in size.

I don't have any early ones, but I think I know a guy who has one or two. Over at Pomona a couple of weeks ago he said he had one or two. He was talking about $1000 for a 3:08 (3:07), just the center, not the suspension. We usually sell the whole suspensions to hot rodders, 36 or 44's. As a matter of fact, that's one of the problems out here in AZ and Ca. No one is fixing the early C-4s, just parting them out for their suspensions, and whatever they can get for the rest of the parts. It's kind of sad to see
