Default Boost, big power and failed CAT

I have Glens car in the shop, and while going through some problem solving one of which was Glens complaint that the car suddenly lost power. Well here is what I found as a cause:

What you see here is the core hanging out of the left side of the X pipe

This is on the engine side of the X pipe where you see a bunch of pieces of the core that wasn't able to be expelled.

The CATs I installed into Glens car were made by Dynatech, they use the same cores as Random Tech and others that use a mettalic substrate. In this case from what I can tell the bonding agent failed in the core that is suppose to hold it in place in the shell. The core it self was not clogged up, at least not until I used a rather large screw driver (a three foot long driver) to forcibly remove the core from the X Pipe. When the core blew out of its case, it wedged itself into the Dr. Gas X pipe, basically obstructing the gas flow from the left bank. It later moved down stream a bit to allow some flow. I should say that it flowed fairly well for how it was plugging one side off, as I was able to fry the tires at will up into fourth gear getting on the freeway.

I was rather shocked as to what I found in the exhaust. I am not sure at this time whether I will install another set of DTH CATs or if I will go with another brand.

Wow, i just bought magnaflow "spun cat" 4" in diameter and 8" long, its a 59900 series and made of metallic substrate and not ceramic. I have not installed yet but about to next week. I was almost bouhgt Dynatech but price kept me away and magnaflow costed me 87 bucks each and they flow 575 Cfm each.

Thanks for sharing tom. Would u prefer metallic substrate or ceramic on a high perf car. I take my car over 100 mph atleast 3-4 times every week, and will this metallic cat's pass emmission's ?. sami

Sammi, the metallic cored CATs should work fine in your application. I think this one failure is a rare occasion. There are only a couple manufacturers of the cores, so that means that most of these CATs has the same internals as the other guys. You got a smoking deal on that Magnflow CAT.
