I've been experiencing a problem with electrical system since yesterday---driving down the road the voltage keeps fluctuating from 13.7-13.1 then when it drops lower the digicluster goes black and the car seems to shut down and then a few seconds later runs back to normal----I have this strong feeling its a Ground problem for the ecm.....I ran a jumper wire from a gx location to "1" ground wire on ecm---INCASE the ecm gx is loose somewhere, but I haven't tapped into the other gx wire (isn't there 2 gx wires for the ecm unit?) black/white wires? obviously the wire i jumped from has not corrected the problem. i don't know where the gx points are for the ecm--back of engine somewhere ?? I have the shop book for my year car, but I can't find the help i need....my car is an 85--Any help please
Since your digidash goes black with the engine failure, i'm thinking it's more of a global power problem.
Loose ground or + lead somewhere ??
Good luck
weird thing is I noticed yesterday that my AC does not blow cold anymore....it did before, not sure if that has anything to do with this new problem....I have a friend who owns an auto electric shop and he metered my battery and alt and said they are putting out a good 14.2-14.3 volts, when my digicluster was reading like 13.6 SAME time he was checking....
I'm going to take it my friends shop and let them take care of me, was just hoping it was something I could fix without spending too much time on it...opinions are still welcome and i could mention them to him...
Sounds like a ground problem. I believe the major ground connection is on the left (driver) side above the oil filter on an 85. It's kind of a stinker to get to, and should have about 5 or 6 straps connected to an 18 mm bolt. I'd check all the ground connectors on the engine and the frame, there are several.
I was talking to Gordon Killebrew about a problem once and he said low voltage could take the cluster out....find out what's wrong before you end up having to buy a new or rebuilt cluster. it does sound like a ground problem.
the cluster is fine, its already been rebuilt...I'll check the ground pts around the engine if I can lift the car up some I'll get under there...where are the distribution blocks at ?
on the drivers side back of the head there is a ground block (don't need to get under the car) there are a few grounds there, and from there, there is a braided ground strap that goes to the frame rail just in front of the battery.
I think I found the problem and fixed it!!! i was getting ready to swap out the alternator with a 2nd alt I had stored away and I unhooked the power wire harness and noticed the small wire pulled right out of the harness (there are 2 wires in the connector large red wire and a smaller brown wire) so i restripped it and crimped it back in and what do you know!! So far so good on the voltage----But the AC is still a puzzle, blows air, but not cold. the compressor is not kicking in while at idle with ac on. I checked that wire harness and fuse--they check out good....haven't looked in my shop manual yet, but I can say...The Whole ac system has been replaced with new parts and blew icecold air untill i checked it yesterday.....Any opinions on this?
