Don't go cheap on the converter. Go with a good name such as TCI, Coan, Vigilante etc...You could put one in from an 85 vette and get about 2500 rpm stall. The problem is that most of them from GM are remans and they will come apart with alot of abuse. That will take out (destroy) the transmission as well. You don't want that!

PeteK: HELP!!!!!
I typically avoid the e-bay stuff. Quality is sometimes questionable. I did not click the link, so I am not bad mouthing any company specifically.
Because I had difficulty buying quality converters, I began using a local shop to hand build them for me. They are a wee bit more money, but I feel it is worth it. I would make a few phone calls locally to see if you have someone good close by.
The price spread on torque converters range from $125-$975
Naturally, high quality stuff costs money.
How much power do you intend to make?
Nitrous or boost? Or motor only?
In my opinion, you definately want lock up on a street car. Late 84 and up cars use a 30 spline version.
Any questions, just ask.

Based on that goal, I would suggest a quality 12 inch, 30 spline, lock up converter. The company I use charges $300 for something like this. You can step up to a 9.5 inch custom unit, but they are much, much more and it is quite hard to get them to stall below 3000 rpm. I have been running a 12 inch successfully for 15 years. 2x I freshened it, but never broke it.
I personally have had trouble with tci and B&m.

Have to agree with PeteK. A local shop made my 2500 stall and I couldn't be happier.
