My car has been sitting for about a year and finally after doing a major tune up and replacing my ecm i finally got it up and running. The issue i'm having is after putting new gas in and adding a fuel system cleaner when i drive and give it gas the car vibrates alot and i get alot of popping from the exhaust. Last night after taking it out again for a little drive and parking it i left the engine runing and checked under the car to notice the back portion of the cats and exhaust were red hot. I was only driving for about ten minutes. Need help with this.

If the cats glow, they are clogged. I say chop those suckers off. Loud and horsepower. If you have emissions, get a high flow cat...Also dont park it in the garage or in grass area if they are glowing. Could cause a fire.
One thing I would like to add is, my car backfired and it sounded like a shotgun going off when I hit the gas it went pow and went i let off the gas it went pow pow pow....getting softer. It was the EGR. Is yours working? Been replaced? Could be that but I am just throwing out a suggestion.
Popping in the exaust is typically a rich condition. I would check to see if you have a cts or fuel problem(leaky injector bad regulator etc) before swapping out the converters. If the problem is in front of the converters, you will ruin the new converters quickly.
I already replaced the EGR. When i had to replace it the computer through a code for it. I have no "check engine" light but i could have the injectors checked out. I just don't see how bad injectors could cause my exhaust pipes to glow, but thats why i'm glad you guys are here for assistance. Thanks.
yeah your car is running rich, the excess unburned fuel in the catalytic converter causes it to glow. the popping sound is the engine backfiring. are you SURE theres no DTC's?
why did you replace the ECM? what did you do in your "tune up"? more detail
Tune up- replaced opti, wires, plugs, filters, changed all fluids to include manual tranny fluid. I changed the ECM because it was acting up, my speedo would go blank while i was driving the car, the revs kept bouncing around (even though i changed the tps, iac and electronic control module). On the advice of a mechanic friend of mine i replaced the ECM and the car started right up. He suspected the original ecm was damaged over time from heat soak. I'll check on the fuel system.

The ECM? I have a problem where ALL my lights flicker. Even as I am going down the road, the inside ones flash on for a second, when I hit a speed bump radio goes out for second my digidash half has gone blank coolant tells me it is at 299 CONSTANTLY and goes up and down some. My speedometer tells me im doing 50,45,30 0, miles per hour when im idling never stays still. It has a rough idle. The gas pedal sticks and it idles really high like at 1200 and then if i tap the gas it goes down. Do you think this is a bad ecm? Also my car is a 1986, automatic. Thanks.
CRVETTE92, I would be hesitant to say your engine is running rich without proof. You can check for fuel pressure leak down and run a ECM scan to be sure, plus other things. If the cats are glowing....more than likely they are bad/clogged. If the engine is running rich, replacing the cats will not do much good, because the first 100 miles or so the new cats will be bad too. Why did the cats go bad? Could be from age and/or a rich condition.
B!@cK 86 V3tt3, I would not say your ECM is bad just from what you have stated.

I would strongly get it checked before i start throwing parts at your problems. I had alot of your same issues. When i replaced the ecm the car started right up. They are a few threads on this topic you can do a search on for more input.

I also had popping and sputtering from my car last week, got a load of fuel with water in it. 2 bottles of dry gas took care of it. You might want to try that also.
,i don't think its running rich ,maybe a few rodents made a nests in the converter and you would be surprised what they drag in their. i seen that before on a blazer my buddy got off a farm it sat for about a year and on the way home it started to lose power then finally it stopped we looked under it and the converter was red hot so we towed it home and cut the converter out and found a huge rodent nest. their was hay, wood, foil, and wat ever else they can get in their.check it out

As far as the red hot exhaust, I noticed on my 85 that the exhaust was glowing bright red after 3 minutes of running shortly after getting mine back up after 5 years of sitting. I too thought the cat was bad because of rodent issues... come to find out he cat was perfectly fine and the engine was actually just running rich. After some fuel system work everything was back up and running perfect.
