I just picked-up a 1996 cpe today, brought it home and the interior lights
won't shut off !! i checked everything obvious looks ok so I pulled the fuse
for the night, could it be the courtesy light timer ? if so where is it located. thanks
My 89 roadster had the same problem, if yours is like mine under the passenger knees remove the plastis above knees, ther you will see a connection that is skaped like an L it is all white remove this and reinstall your fuse, this is your problem, it is a timer and shuts off all interior lights at a designated time, new I believe they cost about $20.
HELP !!!i spent half the day looking for the courtesy light timer and i can't find it under either side of the dash !! any other thoughts would be appreciated.
thanks :

Re: 1996 interior light problem (paul 86cpe)
Well im sure between 89 and 96 its been moved. If you don’t have a factory service manual, get one. It contains more information about your car than you will ever need to know. :chevy
I'd try readjusting the door closure switches. If you look a the pin switches closely you'll see an little umbrella like post that can be pulled out a bit. They then adjust when you close the door.
Paul86cpe,
My 95 manual says to check your door key switches-'courtesy lamps always on'.
Do your have access to a scanner for your 96? If you can get the use of it would save a lot of time.
There is a "courtesy light relay" located in the bottom R/H side of the I/P, in relay container. It would be best to get it diagnosed before you buy stuff you may not need. Hope this helps. :flag
i agree with Vanduker, check the adjustment on the door switch. and DO NOT USE WD-40 on these type of door switches. if you do the adjustable pin will slide in and the door switch will not make. I've been there and done that!
BTW there is also a hatch switch which may be the cause.
The same thing happened with my 92 coupe. It took two hours to track it down two minutes to fix. Problem?--Hatch latch and switch had loose bolts. Easy access, I added two star lock washers and moved the entire latch mount up towards the hatch opening as far as possible. Torqued that sucker down even more than I thought wise--mechanics' feel, you know-- end of problem.
