(i know i butchard the spelling on that one)
whew... allow me to introduce you to the "punctuation mark." They come in several varities... Periods - "."; Exclaimation Mark - "!" and the ever famous Question Mark - "?"; and we can't neglect a favourite, the Colon - ":"!
With that said... The ABS has it's own computer. Is the ABS light turned on? This would be on the DIC, near where the Check Engine Light (SES) is. Is the brake light on?
Do you hear any electric motor noises from the rear? That would be the ABS self testing during startup. This is normal, and lasts only a couple of seconds.
I don't have the 2nd volume of the Helm inside... it's in the garage. There is a method of jumping the ALDL ports and it will give you ABS codes, if any are stored.
For ****s and giggles, check the front wheels speed sensors. These are wires that enter into the front wheel bearings from the middle of the spindle. It is possible with the engine install that you damaged one or both. Also, check to be sure the brake line pressure sensor harness connector is attached (the wire sensor on the master cylinder). Without that, the ABS won't work.
Finally, check all fuses.
The ABS brain is located in the storage bin behind the drivers seat. It might require a socket to remove the nut.
Top of brake fluid.
Check "Brake", "Guages", "Stop/Haz", and "INJ 1" fuses
Inspect and clean the tip of each ABS wheel sensor on each wheel knuckle.
Look through the sensor hole and make sure the ABS rotor is not missing teeth or caked with dirt all the way around.
thank youfor all your replys, im almost sure its the abs brain, and since i have a hoopers racing reareand i probably wont have wheel sensors so getting a new brain will do nothing at all.
The only way you're going to be able to test your ABS system is with a factory service manual (unless Agent PDF comes though with his links). Even doing every test in the book may not be able to tell you what the problem is. If you have a rear end that doesn't use wheel speed sensors, then your ABS system wasn't working anyway (not sure if you're chasing a problem you can't fix).
Assuming it's not a fuse, any fault within the ABS system will deactivate the ABS. So, it doesn't mean it's the computer. On most cars, a wheel speed sensor is usually the culprit, but it could be other things. If I'm not mistaken, your 88 has the same sytem as my '86 and the ABS system does not throw a trouble code. So you won't be able to get any info from the ALDL plug (I think that's around 89/90 and up).
