Can anyone tell me the correct setup for a 1991-1993 lower steering shaft to the middle steering shaft. The lower shaft is attached to the steering column and slides through the firewall to meet up with the middle shift. The lower shaft fits in a sleeve that locks it in place with the middle shaft. On the lower shaft there is a rounded side all the way down and a rounded side with a flat portion towards the bottom. I need to know if that flat portion faces the outside of the sleeve (towards the bolt that holds it in place) or the inside of the sleeve (away from the bolt that holds in it place. Thanks.

I believe the flat side is where the bolt is placed. More importantly make sure the rack is centered and the steering wheel is centered before bolting it back together.
When the wheel and rack are centered, the flat will face the diver's side fender and the bolt will be on that flat side. Also be very carefull with the lower shaft, it doesn't take much of an impact at all to sheer off the plastic pins that hold the lower shaft in the telescoping upper shaft.
That's what I thought. Thanks. Also, the GM service manual mentions the plastic pins and that the steering shaft should be replaced if the pins are sheered off. I noticed one of mine appears to have some of it missing and the other looks ok. I'd like to know how performance is affected if one or both of the pins are sheered. Thanks.
