Default '96 Fuel Filter Change

Ok, I tried to change my fuel filter in my '96 LT4. PITA. The filter is mounted up at about 45 deg. I got the lower inlet off and mounting off without a problem. But could NOT get a wrench on the upper outlet. What trick do you guys use?

I'd be curious to know as well. Recently, I had to replace the evaporator on mine which means removing the entire air box from the firewall....this exposed the fuel filter very well so I replaced it on the spot.

There's got to be an easier way.

I remember seeing a post someone made where jiffy lube will supply the fuel filter and change it for ~$30. I changed the one on my 95 a few years ago, but can not give descriptive detail, sorry. Not real easy though.

Just did mine a few weeks ago. The trick: Undo the lower fuel line from
the fuel filter.
Loosen the fuel filter clamp.
Then, use a fuel line disconnect tool from the fuel line on top of the engine with a fuel line release tool and either pull straight up or pull out from the bottom (the fuel line and filter attached). Disconnect the line that is attached to the fuel filter and not the return fuel line.

The fuel line release tool is plastic and cost around $9.00 at any auto parts store.

Before doing the above, disconnect the neg. battery terminal. Take the gas cap off to release the pressure and at the fuel rail valve, relieve all the pressure.

I pulled mine out from the bottom. The convertibles are more difficult. I tried Jiffy Lube once and they would not do it. I did it myself the following weekend then went back and told them how it's done. Just don't forget to relieve that pressure.

I just replaced mine.

The KEY is:

Follow the fuel line from the engine to the bracket attached to the hvac box and unhook it there. Then follow the lines along the bottom of the car aft of the filter and disconnect those backets. Now you will have plenty of movement to pull the filter down and disconnect. The lines at the engine are very flexible and allow the filter to be moved around quite a bit.

Be prepared to immediately put the new filter on even after you have relieved the pressure. The fuel continues to run out. It may be easier if the tank is not full.

Good Luck!!!!
