Well this sounds, strange but here it goes. On the passenger side the spring popped out of the windshield wiper when they were on and now that windshield wiper has no tension on it to help it remove the water. Then I was cleaning the windshield and on the newer cars you can pull the wipers up and they lock into place....I didnt know that wasnt the case here. I pulled it all the way up on the drivers side and now the windshield arm completly snapped off and it just flails aroudn when I hit the button. Its still conected and runs but it dont streak off the water. What did I break and HOW do I get the windshield spring back on. I got one off of a astro van and it fits but I cant figure out how to get it on. It has ALOT of tension on it and besides using a winch and a pole burried 40 ft underground what tools, skills do I need to do this with. I cant find anyone with the same problem.....
good luck my spring poped off also, i got it back on with a vise, needle nose plyers, and vise grips. it can be done it takes alot of effort and probably some blood. my spring poped off and split my cheek open so good luck
You are the FIRST person who hasnt thought I made this up. The people at the autoparts store thought I was a nut. I dont have the strength to hold it down by myself. Guess Ill wear a paintball mask.... Atleast I know its possible. Thanks.
Darn, but this very thing happened to me just today. Came here to search and found I have company in the misery. There is absolutely no way I'm strong enough to get that spring back on, even with the arm held in a vice.
My search also came up with the 95-96 "upgrade" but I haven't seen enough people make this change to encourage me that the change will be uneventful on my 91. Alas, the older arms aren't cheap.

Make sure you have all the parts before giving up. On mine (an '87) there was a piece of metal about 1/4" long that went from the spring to the anchor point at the bottom of the arm. I found that piece after purchasing a replacement at a junk yard for $25. Probably could have fixed it if I'd found that piece before. As it was, I was trying to pull the spring that much further and hook it in a way that it wasn't made for.
