I obtained an engine without a flywheel so I have no weights to move over and no reference to counterbalance a replacement flywheel.
I am wondering if anyone has tried balancing a flywheel on a 1990 L98 by running the engine in the vehicle without the transmission installed and moving weighs/washers around to minimize the vibration? Besides subjectively measuring vibration I could connect a transducer to the bellhousing and watch the output on an oscilloscope or record the transducer output into an audio recording program which can run FFTs on it to measure resonant frequencies.
This would be a tedious process of taking measurements, stopping the engine, moving weights, repeat, etc. but would it work?
There is a set weight balancing standard (from what I understand for all L98 engines). You would be better off finding out what that standard flywheel calibration is from one of more knowledgable guys on the board then take it to a machine shop and pay 50 bucks to have them match balance the flywheel to the standard.

Sorry but this post makes no sense to me. To my knowledge there is no "standard flywheel calibration" as each engine can be different. It would be nice if the factory had the specs for my engine and could provide them to a machine shop to balance my flywheel.
What I am asking is if anyone ever tried balancing the flywheel while it is on the car with the transmission removed? From what I am reading is that 90% of the time a neutral balanced flywheel will work fine. It seems to me that if I fell in the 10% that it would be easier to correct if the transmission was not yet installed.
hi 89er,
i would also love to know some more about balancing flywheels as i have just brought from tpis a new 22 lb steel lightened fly wheel to get rid of the old heavy 40 lb flywheel and would also would like to know r.e balancing this new flywheel iv got to then install it on my zf 6 speed blag tag gear box!
cheers

Our '90 flywheel are NOT neutral balanced. You can be fairly close though with the "standard" balance of a dual mass flywheel. Since you don't have the DM from your org. motor, see if you anyone in your area does that you can borrow.
I have one of the TPIS alum. flywheels in my car now & it had a weight bolted to the back to "mimic" the DM. I couldn't find a shop to match balance it to my DM but it has been fine for several years now as installed.
hi trog,
i was just wandering please mate,
how big is the weight?
where exactly is it fitted to the fly wheel?
roughly how heavy is the weight?
what would the weight look like please?
thanks
