Default Does Anyone Check Installed Valve Spring Height When ...

installing Crane Gold 1.6 Roller rockers and LT4 springs on an otherwise stock LT1 with the heads on. I do not plan on checking the spring force at the installed height. New 7.200 pushrods and other new hardware will be used. Will it work OK if you just slap it together? Comments and experiences will be greatly appreciated

never slap women around, never slap engines together --same results either way --bad...take new or used springs to any auto machine shop and have em checked for small $ or do em yourself with a bathroom scale on your drill press (put a block of wood on the bath scale to distribute the force or you will bend the top of the scale, make a gauge block for spring height, chuck a bolt in the drill chuck so a spring doesnt get rowdy and give you a black eye)

But the heads will not be removed from the engine. Also, I agree with your advice about women.

If you want everything perfect, yes check the installed heigth. My first mod was Crane Gold 1.6 RR and LT4 springs. I didn't check the installed heigth, and used my stock push rods. Everything worked perfect with this method.

Also, when I pulled the stock LT1 springs. All just had the stock seat and no shims.

That depends in how close to spec you end up at, after you "slap" it. If you don't check you'll never know.

You don't have to remove the heads from the engine to put the springs on the bathroom scale or to have a shop check them. Also, you don't have to remove the heads from the engine to set the installed height of the springs. The length of the push rods has nothing to do with spring tension.

A special micrometer for checking the height makes it very easy and they're not very expensive. I think that Comp Cams and probably most cam and valve train component manufacturers offer them. I don't think I paid over $50 for mine. Maybe a friendly machine shop would rent you one, if nothing else.

Spring height micrometer. Get the one with the correct
dimensions for your springs.
