Default speedometer claibrator questions

How does the electronic speedometer calibrator work ? The ad I read for it claims it's a simple four wire install, is it ? What does it connect to ? Thanks !

I have had one here for years and never used it. If I can find the directions, I will scope it out.
If you need the correct speedo gears for the 3:73's, I can hook you up .
I have always preferred swapping the gears.

I have it on my 91. It is just 4 wires, it took me about 20 minutes to install.

It's got a red and black wire for power and ground. I think the other 2 wires are white and yellow. You tap the white and yellow wires into the purple wire cominng from the VSS sensor.

Once the wiring is done, you take the top off the box and set the dip switches as per the instructions.

I went with the box instead of the gears for a couple reasons. First, I went to 4.09 gears, so I would of had to change both the drive and driven gear in the transmission. The cheapest I could find both gears was about $120, which was $20 more than the box. Second, if I ever change the gears again, all I have to do is reset the dip switches. I can put any gear and any tire on the car and have the speedo be correct.

With 3.73s there's really no excuse to use a calibrator. The gears are dirt cheap, and you probably only need 1 gear at $8. The oring is another $4.

It's easier to swap than changing oil.

PM me (or Pete) if you want to go that route, I'll figure out what gears you need.

Central, I've been wanting to remove that speedo calibrator OUT of my car, I have the keisler tranny in my 85 and I don't feel comfortable with that gadget tapped into my ecms wires...If I can swap out a speedo gear and not use this calibrator and get about the Correct MPH then I'm up for it, TKO-500 Ratios: 3.27, 1.98, 1.34, 1.0, 0.68 My rear gear is stock. Thanks alot!!!

I don't know what the keisler needs to work. It seems like half the people using them are having trouble getting their speedo to work, which sort of tells me there isn't an easy solution like changing speedo gears.

It is a calibrator from Dakota Digital and I now have very precise instructions with pictures. It is quite simple actually.

Chillcat: I believe I didn't have these instructions when you were having trouble installing it. Is it working o.k. now? Let me know and I will contact you.

The Dakota Box is the only way to go for off the wall combos to get it just right but IMHO it is not worth it. I only got one because it was almost free with another item I bought from a forum member. When driving it works great and you can fine tune it to show exact speed, but when standing still the speedo can jump around from 0-15mph, sit at 0, sit at 2, etc. When I have my trans redone I may get rid of the box and just go with gears that are close enough.

so 373's in a '93 only requires the driven gear to be changed? I had asked you about 3.75's and you said I would need to change both gears. seems like it would be close with the gear for a 3.73

You can't get to 3.73 using a 17 tooth driven gear, which is what the automatics came with. I've never heard of 3.75 gears, not that it matters, it's basically the same ratio. I guess I thought the original poster had a ZF (with the 15 tooth driven gear)
