Hello everyone. I'm a new user. In March I bought a 91 Corvette, and I'm looking to slowly upgrade it so I'll be asking alot of questions. I just installed an air foil and I was wondering if the Air Pump Replacement Pulley is a good upgrade to do. Also what other upgrades would anyone recommend for a good ol' L-98.
What actually does the AIR Pump do anyway, and will it effect my car's idle if I replace it? Also can I use the down sized and oversized pulleys with the Air pump replacement pulley?
It recyles emissions gasses I heard to make the engine burn cleaner for emissions, shouldn't have much of a negative effect without it.
I hear most people like it because it reduces down the number of things in the engine bay.... which reminds me I need to call and find out how my engine swap is doing... busy buying a house and I forgot about the critical thing I'm going to fill the garage with ;)
nsimmons can you explain in more detail for the rest of us? Perhaps a diagram showing how you routed the belt? I'm looking forward to seeing this. Thanks
Welcome, as soon as i get my website up and running i will post times and mods to show how i went from 15.6-15.8 at bandimere to 14.82. Depending on how much you want to spend 91's are really easy to make power with. I don't think i have more than $600 into performance on my car so it really isn't too expensive
Nick, can you post the routing that you used? I think that it's different on an '84. The Camaro guys do it, but the C4 L98's have the PS pump I believe, in a different location. There is a diagram that I have somewhere that shows how they do it, but it's definitely different than a Corvette L98.
yeah the routing is different on an 84, but it shouldnt make a difference..I used the stock routing on my car, without the air pump you would need a belt 3"s shorter i simply routed it from over the top of the alternator, under the tensioner then over the a/c usually the belt goes from the alt, to the air pump, but in my case the belt just runs straight across the engine from the alt to ac, what i did was buy 5 belts from 87-82"s found the one that fit,a nd returned the others

Re: Air Pump Replacement Pulley Kit (nsimmons)
I can't say for certain but I read here a while back that there is a difference. If memory serves me, if you try this method, the part where the belt runs from the air pump to the ac will foul the air intake duct on all models except the 84's.
The air pump adds fresh air to the exhaust stream to make the catalyst more effective. That's all it is for. If you have no cats, or have gutted them, it is useless. By removing it, not only will you eliminate the mechanical loss in operating the pump, but you will also decrease the amount of work the exhaust system has to do. The only downsides are higher emissions (if you care about that sort of thing) and the cost of the replacement pulley.
The recycling that Notbob was referring to is the EGR system, it's not part of the air pump system.
I'm curious if a shorter belt would work like Nsimmons said. I'm pretty sure I looked and decided it wouldn't on mine, but I have an 86 and it is probably different from the 84.
