In my auto shop class we are trying to fix a 1980 buick elecktra. It seems to start and run finee-- Owner said it will but if it sits for a while after running it wont start again. Im thinking leakey injector maybe? He bought new plugs, distrib. cap, and rotor. Should we put them on? He replaced the O2 sensor 2 years ago. This thing is a TPI similar to ours. Could it be the MAF? it has a little bit of a rough idle. Thanks in advance. My grade's depending on it. :D
Re: Need help troubleshooting-- urgent!! (Jsailor24)
Does it have an ECM? Can you pull codes? If it is a leaky injector you could floor to let in air and clear the flooded condition and it would start. Check the cap and rotor as well as 1 or 2 plugs. If they are worn replace them. He says it won't start? Will it turn over? Go to basics #1 Fuel - Check pressure at fuel rail. #2 Spark - Make sure you have good spark to the plugs. I had a real problem with a 80s GM once would start when it wanted to. Turned out to be a bad rotor that was grounding through a hairline crack when it got hot.

Very helpful. It has an ECM-- i dont think we have the stuff to pull codes so weel have to do it manually. checked today-- it had spark-- never a problem cranking. How do you check pressure at the fuel rail. Where is the right spot? How could we check to see if there was a leak?
Re: Need help troubleshooting-- urgent!! (Jsailor24)
If fuel injected, hold the throttle open for 30 sec; then try to start it. If it starts right up, it points to leaking injectors. Holding the throttle open for a short allows the excessive fuel vapor to become diluted with air to partially clear the flooded condition.
