The alarm in the early C4s is activated when you lock the doors using the power locks. The alarm is the deactivated when you open the doors with the door key. There is a small microswitch in each door that gets tripped when using the key to deactivate it. If some day you find that the driver's side door no longer deactivates the alarm, it is because that switch has failed. The passenger side one will probably still work since the driver's side gets 90% of the use over time. 
If you were to reach in the window, slide the lock open, then open the door, the alarm would go off. It will also go off if the hatch is opened.
Also, you can deactivate it by drilling a hole in the battery. ;)
