Hmm.. I've always used the front sway bar mounts as a location to put jackstands. Bad idea?

Default Here's my method

I posted a thread on this once a while back....Here's my method of doing it close to a garage wall to take up only one garage bay.

Start by jacking the front factory jack point on the side close to the wall. Then put a jack stand under the rear point....kind of like this.

Lower the jack and place it under the front cross member favoring the side you just raised. Put a second jack stand under the front jack point...like this.

Now position your jack on the center point on the other side of the car...slightly aft of the mirror. Visually ensure that nothing is binding, such as brake lines. Lift the entire side of the car like a NASCAR racer. Put the stands under it.....like so...

You can now raise the car to the desired height by jacking the center of the front cross member to raise the front, and by using the shock mounts (alternately and evenly) to raise the rear. The exact opposite to get the car back down. I raised my in these photos to do a trans swap. Plenty of room.

Here's the final result

I put some ramps under the front tires as a safety measure....just to alleviate my paranoia....also shake the car vigorously before climbing under it....and never work under a car when you're home alone. Also do this only on concrete. If you're working on the ground, use 2 1" thick sheets of plywood under the stands.

Happy wrenching.

I've heard it both ways and done it both ways. Never made any difference either way. It seems to me the car would be more rigid with everything closed.

While I had my car on stands for two weeks doing the trans, I opened and closed the doors and hood multiple times. Nothing ever bound up.

The C4 Corvette is an incredibly rigid car. You will find that when it's up on 4 jackstands, it generally balances itself on three of them....IE...you'll see daylight under between one stand and the car. Nothing to be alarmed at....perfectly normal. But this is the only car I've ever seen this happen on. The chassis is THAT rigid.
