2 electrical problems in my '84
i know that there has been threads about the digi dash in the '84 going blank and the turn signal and high beam light coming on... as i recall it has to do with a loose ground wire, where is this wire?
also the other day i was getting out of the Vette and the alarm started going off(i didnt know i had an alarm). i went to pop the battery off to stop it and it stopped once i opened the hood, this has happened 2 times since that... what is causing this?
it might not be just a loose ground, but looking at the harness there is more than 1 ground wire for the digi-dash. when mine started this charade it magically corrected itself then the dash went out totally so i hope you solve it soon. this is where a manual comes in handy - i will dig mine out and study...
the alarm i cannot speak of. previous owner defeated mine...i'd have to assume that there is of course a simply bypass that can be done but i am unsure how. i don't think they make the module in question anymore (the stock one) and thats what was determined to be wrong with mine...again i'll see what i can pull up if i get the time...
haynes, but it actually outlines the wiring for the digi-dash quite well. i wish i had the FSM...and i don't even know where my haynes is right now. it might be out in the garage buried with the rest of the car under god knows what...it's on the annual winter break
if you just pull the fuse will it still allow you to start the car? i thought it had an ignition cut-off?
Great site the helped me fix mine. Also, I noticed that my dash light sockets were causing a bad connection... it was pushing the upper board pins off the lower board when I put the caps on. Strange thing there.
Have fun!
Also, FYI... when I pulled the dash pad off, it made it MUCH easier to work on the cluster.

The turn signal and high beam light coming on is more than likely a bad bulb. Check them and see what you get. I will look in my 86 FSM in just a minute, but I doubt it is the same for the 84.

if i hit it then it works, so the bulb is good... but it may be loose
It's been awhile since I had the digital cluster out, but looks like from my FSM that it has two connectors. One (smaller) is a 24 pin and the other (larger) is a 28 pin. You can remove the digital cluster and test the pins on the connectors if you like. On the 24 pin connector the ground B1 (last pin on the bottom right). On the 28 pin connector ground is D1 and D3 ( last pin on the bottom right and the second one above it). Or since you don't have a picture, test them all with a test light to 12v and the other end to the pins. Make sure you know what your doing or negative problems may result.
IIRC, there is also where these grounds go....under the carpet of the driverside kick panel and on the rear right side cylinder head.
The turn signal and high beam on w/the tach and speedo out but still allowing the information center to operate can be the ground strap that attaches to the trans top drivers bolt. On my car it was a bad power supply, i had it replaced and the entire cluster has now worked for over a year w/no difficulties. I had scarabexc@aol.com do the work. He's reliable and very reasonable.
