I replaced mine recently and was wondering if their is a way to repair the rear hatch mechanism with some sort of "solenoid fix"... GM wanted $87 for a new one so it had me curious if anybody had ever figured out how to repair one.
I haven't seen the rear hatch solenoid. If it is sealed well enough, it may not be economical to rewind the solenoid, having to machine it apart to get to the coil. If the coil is open and visible, you can rewind the solenoid which is the most likely cause of its failure. It may not be economical to have an electrical shop to rewind it, but you can always ask what the cost would be. You could probably have found a replacement from an auto parts store for a lot less, or even from a junk yard.
the hatch solenoid failed twice in mine, the first time, it was the factory unit. the second one was from a wrecked car.
The last one was from a wrecked 96, and it's still going.
The price I paid both times was $30 and even after buying it twice, I am ahead of the deal.
I tore one apart, and the coils short out. The pulling power of the solenoid is significantly reduced if that happens. The coils are epoxied in with a substance that would hold up a bridge.
They aren't worth the effort to gut the flimsy tin case and glue in another one, then try to make it water tight.
