hey guys has anyone ever had this problem happen,1990 a4 i was trying to clear infl. light code and it didnt work. so i took off neg side cable in the hope that would work, i waited and then hooked it back up put key in ign turned it on all the gauges lit up fine looked like everything was ok went to start and all the lights go dim and it didnt crank, so i go and tighten bolt on neg side a little tighter. same thing seem to have full power until i try to start car then every thing goes almost dead and alarm goes off could it be just a bad connection on neg. side or did i realy screw something up realy need help on this one thanks geo
It really only sounds like a weak battery or bad connection. I use steel wool to clean the connection to the cables. How old is your battery? How long did you have the door open while working on this with the battery connected? Charge and test that battery. Even a battery that reads over 12 volts may not be able to sustain enough volts to the computer when the starter circuit is closed. IIRC the computer needs 11 volts (min) while starting.
94z thanks that is what i hope also when i turn key to start sounds like it arcs and then every goes dim going to buy new neg, cable and battery hope that does the trick
BTW to test that neg cable you can use a jumper cable and connect the neg terminal to the engine block. You may need to thread a bolt into the side mount to get a good grip with the jumper cable's dogs.
thanks guys for help bought new battery and cable and it started right up bat. had a short when you put load on it no workie you dont want to change neg cable pita thanks again geo.
