There was a very recent thread here re: how many degrees to retard the timing (general rule of thumb is about 2* for every 50 hp, but that can vary).

There are a few ways to do it. You can set your base timing to 3 or 4* btdc, but that will likely hurt non-nitrous performance, so you'd want to set it back to 6* when not using it.

MSD makes a timing retard box, but I think it only works with the MSD ignition control boxes (like a 6A, etc). I'm not sure if there are stand alone timing retard units out there for your application.

There also may be a "back door" way to program the computer, but I'm not as familiar with LT1 systems.

msd has a msd 6al box with the timing retard built in heres the link and jegs has them but you have to ask for them because the are not in the catalog. they are at the web site just put the part number in. http://www.msdignition.com/ignition_18_6520.htm

Can't do this on an LT1.

i would not worry about pulling 2* on a 100 shot.
i would drop the heat range of the plugs down.make 1/2 passes and check plugs.wet kits are easy to tune this way.
i pull 2* for every 50hp over 100hp shot.
if your kit is new the instruction will give you a recomendation or you cold look on the manf web site for instructions..
each kit is rated different, the solinoids used by the companys come from the same places.
is your kit rated at flywheel or rwhp?
i dont know what kind of trans you have but i would invest in a window switch and a low fuel pressure cut off ,maybe a wideband o2.
if your car is a daily driver and your know your going to go play i would add Toulene to the gas to boost the octane rating

Formula (R+M)/2 Cost Mixtures with 92 Octane Premimum Note
10% 20% 30%
Toulene 114 $2.50/gal 94.2 Octane 96.4 Octane 98.6 Octane (1)
Xylene 117 $2.75/gal 94.5 Octane 97.0 Octane 99.5 Octane (2)
Methyl-tertiary-butyl-ether (MTBE) 118 $3.50/gal 94.6 Octane 97.2 Octane 99.8 Octane (3)
Methanol or Ethanol 101 $0.60 - $1.75/gal 94.3/94.7 Octane Not Recommended Not Recommended (4)
Isopropyl Alcohol and Tertiary Butyl Alcohol 101 $0.60 - $1.50/gal 94.5 Octane Not Recommended Not Recommended (5)

Notes:

Toulene: Common ingredient in Octane Boosters in a can. 12-16 ounces will only raise octane 2-3 *points*, i.e. from 92 to 92.3. Often costs $3-5 for 12-16 ounces, when it can be purchased for less than $3/gal at chemical supply houses or paint stores.

Xylene: Similar to Toulene. 12-16 ounces will only raise octane 2-3 *points*, i.e. from 92 to 92.3. Usually mixed with Toulene and advertised as *race formula*.

Methyl-tertiary-butyl-ether (MTBE): Oxygenate. Very common in octane booster products. Has lower BTU content than toulene or xylene, but oxygenate effect makes the gasoline burn better and produce more energy.

Methanol or Ethanol: Methanol is wood alcohol. Ethanol is grain alcohol and found in Gasohol in 10% ratios. Both alcohols are mildly corrosive and will eat gas tank linings, rubber and aluminum if used in excessive ratios. Main ingredient in "Gas Dryers", combine with water.

Isopropyl Alcohol and Tertiary Butyl Alcohol: Similar to Methanol/Ethanol. Isopropyl Alcohol is simply rubbing alcohol.
