1. A/C stops blowing hard after the car has been running for a long time (like driving on the freeway for 15-20 minutes).
2. When I shut down the car, I get a very large pool of condensation that builds below the car.
3. When #1 occurs, I've also noticed that the water temp tends to rise some, as if the cooling fans stop working. If I shut off the A/C for 30 seconds-1 minute and then restart it, the temp tends to fall back down to a normal range.
As for #1, I've been told by one person it is being caused by a freezing evaporative cooler. Can anyone confirm? Is an accumulation of ice resulting in #2?
What causes this condition? I had the system checked out and it was quote "fully charged". But I'm beginning to question this particular mechanic's skills. I also reset the A/C head unit by unplugging the battery and I don't see any flashing lights on the unit (i.e. throwing codes). So for now, I'm eliminating the head unit as a possible suspect.
Thanks for the input, folks! I really do appreciate it!
Get your pressure readings, note the ambient air temp and post them on this web site (they've got great advice along with a GM Tech or two): http://www.aircondition.com/wwwboard/
yes a freezing evaporator will cause a large pool of water under your car. (it would take an hour or so to melt before you would see it) if your AC is fully charged then you must have a blockage of some kind on the Evaporator, like a tissue got sucked into the fan and found its way to the evaporator. if you get GOOD air flow before I would not suspect this. My bet is still low charge, in a 2lbs sys if your 4oz low it can lower your evap temp into the freez range. As for #3 you have a low pressure switch which will shut down the compressor, that would stop the fan and you would notice the engine temp rising. use the C68 diagnostic http://www.idavette.net/tech/c4diag.htm next time the unit has failed. you should be getting the 09.
