Just wondering, can a master brake cylinder be easily rebuilt?

Yes. If you can find a kit. But I think you'll find that a rebuilt master is about the same price as a rebuild kit.

I was wanting to find a rebuild kit for my 96. Mid America wants almost $400.00 for a new brake master cylinder Way too much for one with plastic top. I have rebuilt several GM units (the old style) and as long as the bore is not pitted and it still is in spec. (bore not worn) new O rings and dust boot and you are OK.

Try your local AC Delco outlet for a rebuilt MC.

A few years ago I picked up one (~$40) and it's been doing it's job just fine ever since the installation.

I always recommend against rebuilt M/Cs. Even among reputable companies the failure rate is simply too high for such an important component. Some will disagree and if you have a good one and it's been working for a long time, that's great. Respond if you wish but I won't argue about it.
I got a brand new and correct PBR M/C for my '95 on eBay a couple of years ago for less than $100, so shop around.

Most Corvette owners/mechanics do not have a dial bore gauge to check the bore. Being a Tool&Die maker for 30 years has taught me how to QC these parts. How many NEW clutch Slaves from GM has Bill at ZFDoc.com rebuilt because of poor QC problems, bores too large, seals installed backwards. Or how about New GM Opti Sparks that do not work. My point is New is not always best. But I do agree with you that this is a Very Important part and for the average person, buy a $400.00 new one. How did you know the one from E-Bay was Really new? Did you get warranty with it? I have been shopping around and so far there are no new MC for $100.00. You were lucky. But if you do see a New MC for $100.00 Please PM me. Thanks Louis

Last year I replaced mine with a new one. Such an important part, buy a new one, don't do a rebuild.
