Default Clutch Problems, Please HELP!!!

Ok, as I posted yesterday in the general discussion, everything went too well with my clutch install. Now with the clutch installed and the transmission bolted back up I have a small (read major) problem. It seems that my clutch won't disengage. The pedal feels good, everything is installed properly, but it just simply won't disengage, making driving it a little impossible.

As best I can tell the slave cylinder still works, if you compress it and then press the clutch you can't hold it back. The only thing I can think is that the pressure plate might be bad. Tomorrow I'm going to drop the tranny again and examine the plate. In theory the clutch plate should fall if the pressure plate releases properly, if it doesn't fall I guess I know my answer.

This really pisses me off. I had 4 days to do a 2 day job and I'm still not going to be able to finish because there is no way to get any parts I may need over the weekend.

BTW, we checked the fluid in the clutch system, we added some and bled it, no help at all.

Anybody have any ideas?

if yours has a slave cylinder like my 86 does then it could be air in the system. I have heard that they can be a real pain to get it all out, I recommend using a vacume pump along with hanging the slave cyl with the bleeder upward. having someone pump the pedal just won't do the job for some reason.
after putting mine in I had to have it on the floorboard to get it to disengage, this got better after driving it a couple of miles.
theres my 2cents

That would be the preferred choice believe me. I am just curious how air got into the system if I didn't take it apart?

Nathan,
ok, are youo using a singlemass or dual mass set up? has it released since you depressed it the first time? if not, the slave cylinder or master cylinder rod may have come out too far and hung up. does the pedal still push down or has it pumped up and now undepressable? (pedal up cannot pressit down? is the pedal on the floor and stuck? need more info, i have had some clutch issues and mght be able to give you some places to check but i will need some more specifics of the situation.. if your using a singlemass set up did you chec the throw of the slave cylinder rod as opposed to the throwout bearing arm pivot distnace? please post details..... i hate to see somehting like this, my car is in a parking lot right no and i have no spark. uggghhhh!! i know how you feel!

Alrighty, like you asked, more info. This really gets wierd.

It would not disengage, the pedal traveled just like it always did. We checked to make sure the slave was installed properly, it was. Best I could tell the slave worked, if you pressed it in and then had somebody press the clutch you could not hold in the slave. Everything seemed to be cool, there is no wrong way to install the silly system. This morning we dropped the torque arm, driveshaft and tranny again. We put the clutch alignment tool back in place and pressed the clutch, the disk would move up and down, side to side. The tool was too short to be able to turn the clutch disk, but it seemed to be releasing just fine. We then decided that it was probably a problem with the master cylinder or something strange. Anyway we opted to put the tranny back in. Just for poopies and grins we set it back on the ground and fired it up. It went right into gear no problem. We drove it down the road, -1 cat-back system and it worked just fine. (note, don't do that!! with the windows down the exhuast from the driver's side cat gets sucked right up through the center console)

Everything working we put the exhaust back on it and re-assembled the center console. I don't know, nor do I think I want to know. I'll probably order a new master cylinder soon if I can find a really good adjustable one. For now I'm happy, dumbfounded and confused but happy.

Anyway, thanks for the info guys, BTW what's up with no spark, any ideas?

Nat,
well, 1 coil from advanced, no luck, troubleshoting through the rest i had an idea, i jumed in the truck drove hour 15 minutes to southport from wilmington, jumped out popped the hood on the 94 A4, and took out my trusty 7/32" socket and yanked the ignition control module off the top of the coil. get back in truck and drive back to wilmington and sit in truck for 30 minutes waitng for rain to stop talking to newly aquired ignition module. after another15 minute one way conversation, the rain stopped and i took that as an answer from the module.....which i have by this point named wilson and drawn eyes and a mouth on with red magic marker, well i introdced wilson to my coil and aquainted them nicely with my trusty 7/32" socket, get in car and voila, she cranked right up! it is a good day for hot cam guys!!!!!! tomorrow i will be placing the order or the 88 dollar part rom advance auto to complete my now fully replaced ignition system, coil, wires, plugs, opti, igition control module aka "wilson" :seeya and now i am 100 dollars farther from the N2O.... oh well... i ill get there! congrats on your victory today, tomorrow we storm the gates and rescue the princess... or cruise, i vote for cruisin

later,
chris
