What color smoke, it could be the valve seals which is common, possibly a head gasket. Does the smoke show up on each start up? or does it get better after the engine has warmed up.Typically valve seals cause smoke on the start up. If I were you I'd make sure I don't have any coolant in the oil and if not I'd probably do a compression test. I really don't think going to a different plug will help. What did the old plugs look like?
how do you know it's 4,6,+8? don't you have a Y pipe and a single cat?
If the plugs are fouled, you probbly need new plug wires unless you have 225,000 miles.
Please tell us what color smoke, what about #2 since it seems the one side is giving problems, check to see if the injectors are leaking on those cylinders as well. Do the checks as mentioned above as well.

I don't think you can fix an engine problem by messing around with plug gap or heat range. At least I've never heard of that working. I would have a shop look at it if you aren't sure of what's happening.
