I understand that some year 350s are externally balanced versus internally , what information does anyone have ? I was unable to use the flexplate from my 86 to bolt to my 78 truck 350 4bolt. :smash: Here's the skinny, later model 350 engines with the counterweighted flywheel are "partially" externally balanced. Also the flange is different so when installing the early angine the flexplate needs to be changed, got mine from the local auto parts store no muss no fuss. :smash:
Chevy 400 small blocks have always been externally balanced.
If you make an engine using a 400 crankshaft ( IE: 383 ) you will need the external balanced damper and flexplate/flywheel.
Consider the following, Summit catalog, page 157, B+M flexplates, item # BMM-20239 1986-1994 small block ,168 tooth , externally balanced, also the flexplate from my 86 had a counterweight welded on it but the harmonic balancer was standard full round . It is a 350 . The flexplate I replaced it with is non counterweighted.
