Is it cheaper to buy a cam package at a performance shop, or off ebay?
I called a local performance shop and the said they would do it all for 2,000 it would be like 1,000 for cam package, and another 1,000 for installtion. would it be cheaper to buy a cam package from somwhere else or ebay? or does this sound like a good deal?
the price on the link isn't bad but it isn't good either. $1000 to install a cam is highway robery. And yes I am familiar with the pain in the a$$ that installing a cam in a LT1 vette. The total cost of my engine build (parts and disasembly not included) was $1200 and that included $800 in machining (the crank was a tough balance) The actual shop cost was around $250. Cam install takes time and effort plus several gaskets (intake, timing cover, ect)
so is that cam kit too much? should I buy a kit somewhere else? and how much do little shops cost to install a cam in a LT1, instead of a performance shop?

What else do you plan to do besides the cam? BTW, unless you really know what you are doing stay away from eBay. Yeah, that kit is high.
Look at www.summitracing.com and do some research on LT1 cams, head porting, roller rockers etc.
I need to know more about what you need out of the motor, you said before you wanted 400hp, you can get 400chp with a LT4 hotcam w/1.7rr's/headwork/full exhaust and tuning, if you looked at Nathan Plemon's results. Just go look at his dyno results (which are rear-wheel power, extrapolate back to the crank rating).

the prices you paid actually sound like they're all over the place and don't make sense.
$1000 for that package is definitely too high. Lifters shiuld be included. For a quality custom cam using off the shelf lobes it should run about $300 (crane cams, comp cams are examples)....springs are maybe $100......pushrods, I have Trickflow one-piece these are $80.....good hydraulic lifters run about $275 and thse were'nt even in the package you cited.
$1000 for a shop to do the install (including degreeing the cam) sounds about right. Usually its about 14 hours X $60-$80/hr.
