What kind of scanner are you using? Usually, with all the scanners I have used ( Snap-On and MasterTech ), they read a description along with the trouble code.
Ooops...I almost forgot...when I did get a weird reading that made no sense...it was usually an indicator that the ECM was giving bad data for one reason or another, and the most likely was a defective ECM.
1441: Evaporative emissions (EVAP) system flow during non purge.
The PCM detects high signal voltage on the evap vacuum swith signal
circuit when the PCM is not commanding purge "on".
When the PCM commands the evap canister purge solenoid valve open, and
engine vacuum draws the evap emissions from the canister, the evap vacuum
switch opens (signal high) providing feedback to the pcm that the evap system
is operating. When the pcm commands purge off, the evap vacuum switch closes
(signal low) confirming purging has ceased.
Just curious if your service engine soon light came on with this code. On my 96 it came on and I found it was a defective gas cap. After buying a new one ($5 from dealer) and making sure to screw it on tight my problem went away. I thought this might be related to the code P1441 description???

Yes, SES light was on steady and hasn't gone off yet. With all of the computer problems I've been having lately (3 new ones so far in 3 months) I'll let the dealer figure that one out. At least this time it was only one code, not the 12 that I had last time...

It was an "Actron" I believe - a very basic OBD-II scanner that I borrowed from a friend. Very limited code reference book, and I have not yet acquired the GM Service manauals for the car yet. The supplied book only covered P0xxx codes, nothing higher up..
This is a good reason you may want to pick up the Helms (factory service) manual. The reason I say this is because along with all the trouble codes, it has diagnostic info on how to correct the problem...so you don't end up throwing money at the car. Not quite as much money, anyways!
