Some time ago I saw an article regarding the replacement of a sagging headliner in a C4coupe. I have advanced searched for "headliner" and "headliner repair" and have turned up empty.
Didn't need the article a year ago. As I went to wax my C4 today - my headliner is starting to sag.
I bought some black headliner at the local Fabric store.
Then I got a can of spray headliner adhesive from AutoZone. THis stuff really sticks so make sure you don't get carried away.
Then I took a putty knife and worked it along the outer rim of the top and pried the inner liner away from the hardtop. YOU will need to push the putty knife along the top to separate the liner from the hard top.
Then I cleaned the hardtop by scrapping the adhesive off the entire top
Then I pulled off the old head liner and then sprayed adhesive onto the headliner and put the new headliner on .
Then I put adhesive onto the hard top and dropped the newly covered headliner onto the hard top and it was done.

Good procedure.
My headliner needs to be replaced also and did the research 2-3 years ago but during that time I had enough mechanical problems to keep me busy. However, now all is working OK and am looking at the headliner again. Have done them on other regular cars in the past but this one is slightly different.
What scars me it prying to hard with the putty knife and breaking the headliner. Seems like the angle for the knife would be more vertical than horizontal given the small space to get in. How aggressive can you get with it?
I don't know how old this article is (I'm writing this on 2/23/07) - but I'm having the same problem with a 1986 Coupe.
I'm going to reuse my existing headliner. I'm just going to take it off - see what the condition of the existing "uncovered" headliner is and then try to re-apply the existing liner. It's still in good condition - I just think the glue gave up the ghost.

Amazingly, the backbaord will flex a fair amount, I was agressive and it turned out great
Thanks to all for the advice. Ended up getting the backboard off and it was a mess. I guess years in the AZ heat did it in. No way to repair. Ended up going to an upholestry shop and getting the whole package done.
Total cost with tax $177. Worked out OK for me and completed in less than 24 hours.

I did it both ways with fabric store materal and the fit just was not the same so it reused my orginal which is cut perfect. I did have to trim it down some since the orginal is glued before the whole pad is placed into the cars roof and the extra is flaped inside the top of the roof pad. The orginal was also a better thinkness than what I bought in the fabric store. Do not be afraid to use the spray adheisive but make sure your in a well ventalated area as this stuff is deadly and stinks real bad.I used a butter knife to tuck the extra material into the seam.Prefit it all before you glue.

You rarely can reuse the old headliner material because the old foam on the back disintegrates and it can't be glued. You are lucky that in your case it was possible. Only time will tell if you foam was in good enough condition to reuse.
