Default 1985 question

On a 85, on the passenger side head, there is a coolant sensor. What is it for?

I'm not sure about the 85 but on the 84 head between #6 & #8 cyl there is a sensor for the fan which has one wire hooked to it. Its not the coolant sensor.

That is the cooling fan temperature switch and will turn on the fans when the temperature reaches a certain level. The ECM will also turn on the fans.

On the 85, the aux fan switch (if equipped) is located between #6 and #8 spark plugs in the right side/passenger side cylinder head. As the temp reaches 235* the switch grounds the circuit and turns on the aux fan. Also on the 85 there is a coolant temp gauge sender for the dash gauge readout. It is located between #1 and #3 spark plugs on the left side/driver side cylinder head. Neither one of these is connected to the ECM in anyway, shape, or form.

On the later L98's these items are located opposite sides. Right side is the coolant guage sender and the left side is the aux fan switch.

EDIT: the main fan is contoled by the ECM only. Settings are burnt into the chip.

A few close guesses but no cigar.

In 1985...

On Z51 cars, that coolant temp switch turns on only the auxiliary fan (in front of the radiator) on at 238*F. The main fan is controlled solely by the ECM at 228*F.

On non-Z51 cars, it turns the main fan on at 238*F. (The ECM should already have turned the main fan on at 228*F, so the temp switch is just a backup. non-Z51 cars have no auxiliary fan.)

My non-Z51 1985 has an auxillary fan.

With no aux fan, it should be a plugged hole, at least thats what my book suggests.

(EDIT: I'm referring to '85's- I have no idea if that applies for other years)

Forgot some non-Z cars have the fan option. Oh well.

But ALL 85s have the same coolant switch there, which was my point.

Does it have three vacuum lines coming out of it by chance?
