Re: Gapless rings? (GRX)
I ran a set on a V/6 turbo Buick. Smokey after ideling for a few minute's.And rotating resistence are 2 con's. Better ring seal with less blow by the is a pro.IMO gap ring's are the way to go. It's your call.
Race applications only, they worked fine for me! It was very short duration and oil control was not important. I would not use them on the street, or any kind of road racing.
The Total Seal 2 piece rings I used once were great...made low rpm/idle vacuum really high. They tended to smoke on top end hi rpm's. You have to get clearances just right.
I was considering the other brand or gapless rings which are one piece and the tangs of the gaps overlap one another...those look like they would not have hi rpm flutter issues like the 2 piece designs.
Many pro's and con's w/ going gapless. Most of the big-ez are listed already. Some feel gapless cause the rings to float causing a bad seal.
I've done may gapless applications. Honestly I don't see the need. If you gap your rings, like you should, blow-by is not an issue. You are talking about a splitting hairs worth of power out performance.
There is no clear yes or no to this one. It all comes down to what you are comfortable with.

Yeah, those are the ones I was considering also. Thinking about a supercharger with these rings to minimize blowby because of increased intake pressures.
I had total seal rings in my 396, and I am going with a Childs and Albert file fit this time around. Too many problems I had that I attribute to the rings. Causes a lot of excess crankcase pressure (not just in mine).
My drag racing f-body friends and I have all switched to the Childs and Albert Zero Gap rings. They used to run the Total Seal but had a hard time getting the rings to break in properly. The Childs and Albert's work much easier.
