Default Cranking Engine for Compression Test

Will any harm come to my 86 Vette if I jump the solenoid with a remote starter button tool to crank the engine. I want to operate as I'm used to on other cars. I work alone. I've never had an HEI ignition before so I'm being careful to not damage anything. The distributer cap and coil are removed at this time.

Anyone ....chime in ...need to know before I can procede.

Make sure the wire connectors are disconnected. There shouldn't be a problem with remote cranking it.

If the coil is removed, and you've disconnected all wires to the dist, and the ignition is OFF....You shouldn't have any problems.

You are right to ask though, some ignitions systems can be damaged if you don't have a way for the spark to get to ground and you crank the engine.

For situations where the cap isn't removed, simply disconnect the large pink wire from the connection at the cap labeled, "BAT".

If you have your remote starter button hooked up at the starter solenoid , the ignition switch can be in the "OFF" position. therefore your ignition system has no voltage , no spark , no problem.

Wire the throttle open 100% and unplug the pink wire from the distributor cap.

The computer should not fire the injectors during cranking if the throttle is wired wide open, but as a precaution you can disconnect the fuel pump fuse or injector fuses anyways.

Pull all plugs, and hook up your gage, you should be able to put it where you can see it from inside the car, and just crank with the key.

Which ones? Would they just build up 10000 volts in the system and just sit in there?

'89 FSM says: disconnect BAT lead and the 4-terminal connector to the HEI, remove ECM fuse, throttle open 100%, all plugs out and battery at or near full charge. Be careful with the locking tabs on the connectors: they're old, they're brittle, they break!
