Default Injector Question

Hey boys. I got a question in regards to check(ohming) injectors. I am trying to track down the cause of my surging idle. I replaced all injectors with new Accel 24# inj. and suspect(with the help of all you guru's here) that these may very well be my problem. I have the original set i pulled out of this car and another set I pulled from my 89 firebird i'm rebuilding. The original set all ohmed between 15.8 and 16.0. The ones from my firebird ohmed between 16.0 and 16.2. Are these different sizes? Are these readings in spec? FYI, the firebird also has an L98. Any help is very much appreciated.

I believe your 86 car came stock with Bosch style 22.5 lb/hr flow rate injectors. You have installed Accel 24 lb/hr injectors. The car may have trouble adjusting to the increased rate of fuel into the engine. You can compensate for the increase of fuel flow with the addition of an adjustable fuel pressure regulator. You would reduce the pressure going to the injectors and this would reduce the fuel flow rate to approximately the level of the original injectors. Make sense? Another choice would be to send your original injectors to Cruzin Performance and have them tested and cleaned. Reinstall them into the L98 engine. The injectors from the Firebird may very well be GM Multec injectors which have a high failure rate. I would not install these into an engine that you would like to have operating in a satisfactory manner. I have a photo of the Multec injectors if you need it. Here is the email address of a very knowledgeable person on fuel injectors, Rich Jensen: rich@cruzinperformance.com.

On the question of ohming the injectors, all eight injectors should be very close to the same resistance value. If this is true, you do not have the problem of shorting turns in the injector coils. Shorted turns in the injector coil is a common problem with the Multec injectors. Hope this is helpful to you.

Thank you very much. I understand exactly what your saying. If i could have you send me a pic of the multec injector so i can tell if it is what i have, that would be great. I will give Rich a buzz to find out about my options and go from there. Thanks again!

Jay: Here is the photo of the GM Multec injectors used in Corvettes in the years 89 thru 91. Note there are two different versions in the photo and both are Multecs:

Here is a document on how to change out the injectors on a L98 engine without pulling the runners. Pulling the runners is a pain in the ****:

Good luck with Rich as he is simply the "best" to work with you

Hey Sam, thanks very much. The injectors outta my firebird motor are the Multecs. So i guess those ones are good for paper weights. I appreciate the help.

Sam, I have a stock 89 convertible and I'm having injector trouble. I am going to use your method to replace them. In your opinion, what is a good replacement injector set for my L98?

ryantlq: I suggest you measure the resistance of each injector and note the factory resistance spec is 16.5 +/-.3 ohms. If you have injectors in the single digits or low double digits of resistance, you have shorted turns in the injector coil.

About three years ago, my 89 Corvette started running like crap and it had less than 40,000 miles on it. After spending a pile of $$$$ on parts, a friend in Ohio was telling me about his 89 problems. His mechanic found shorted injector coils.

This is probably where you are at this point in time. You know the problem and NOW you need to know what to do about it.

I got prices from GM on new injectors and with my discount, they were going to be $142 each......times 8 NFW!!!

I got in touch with Rich Jensen at Cruzin performance and he suggested I find some used 86 thru 88 injectors and have them serviced/cleaned. This is what I did to solve my problem! At this point in time, used 86 - 88 injectors are getting hard to find.

Look at this thread http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show....php?t=1704212
and these words: "I am not looking for anything more than stock, so I am going with a set of rebuilt injectors from Ecklers. All the talk about Accel quality made me nervous, plus they don't have a set of 22's. The Accel 21's were my second (and cheaper) choice since I saw Twong's response, since I do not want to put on an AFPR." This can be found in the following thread:

I suggest you contact Mark Sheehy and get more info from him on what he is doing and the results he achieved. Hope this is helpful to you.

I think that Bosch "pink tops" are one of the best replacments injectors.
I don´t know the partnr but I can get it for you if you like. I would try to find "pink tops" on ebay or similar.
Pretty good price and the are serviceable.

falkens: Are the pink tops Bosch injectors rated at 22 lb hr flow rate?

I used the Ford injectors in my '90 which I purchased through Summit and I think at the time a set of 8 were about $200. They are 24# rated so I changed the setting on my chip for injector size which I believe is the most correct way to go instead of using the fuel pressure method. I have no problems after about a year of running them.

I really like Bosch injectors, they're stock on my '85. I put Bosch FX somethings in my '87 Buick and saw an increase in gas mileage and the engine runs smoother.
