distributor timing - spark plug position
6 deg AFTER TDC. The mark on the vibration damper should be read above the "0". If you closely examine the indicator on the block (and this is hard to do), you will see the letters stamped BTDC above the zero mark. A timing setting of AFTER TDC will kill the performance.
On the question of what setting is best for your L98 engine, I used to set the timing at 8 deg BTDC and this will give you a little more jump at the start. However, if you ever get a scan tool, you will be able to see that the factory setting is best for your car. The performance parameters of your engine are programmed into the electronic control module and these charts ASSUME a base timing of 6 deg.
You are almost there

well the timing procedure was done at night and i failed to see the befoere and after signs. Any how, did it the correct way today, moving it to the 6 above zero and WOW, what a difference. I have a lot more response on the low end and i'm spinning those tires again. She is running like the monster she was...maybe even better than before. Thanks again to all those who helped.
As for the intermittent start problem that showed it's face before i messed up the timing, it looks like the ignition module did the trick, though I did clean the wire connections down there as well. Also I did install a new fuel filter in the process, so maybe the old one was clogged up and blocking fuel? Not too sure. Not going to use injector cleaner any more after this though, but thankfully it wasn't the injectors, as those are pretty costly.
