Just wondering if their is a common failure in the A/C system on the later years?
How about the compressors....are they a good, soild unit or prone to failures?
Any sections of the A/C lines prone to cracking or anything?
Just tired mine yesterday for the first time and....no cooling at all. Have not been able to check to see if there is R-134 or not, or if the compressor is cycling or not. At work...car at home...
My 95 was great from about 99 when I bought it until 2005, then the thing started loosing charge. I bought a balck light leak test kit for around $50 if I recall. Traced it to a leaky evaporator core in the blower unit. Changed it out, vacuumed down the system, recharged, and it works like a champ ever since.
I would charge it first and then see how long it holds.
If it works for a season I would wait until it gets bad before changing it.
Or get the leak test kit and find where its really leaking from.
Your system will tell you if it's lost it's charge - is the LED on the Control Panel flashing? Diagnostics is in Tech Tips - run them and see what it tells you. If there isn't a code - Particularly a Low Gas Code - something else is going on. Might just be a bad relay or a loose connection at the Low Pressure Switch (disconnect and reconnect the harness at the switch and see if it comes back - wriggle it around too). You need to do some checking first. Otherwise, the Nippo compressor is a stout unit but has an appetite for shaft seals. If it's leaking there, you'll usually see an oil streak on the hood above the compressor. GM Evaporators are notorious leakers - have an ac shop stick an electronic leak detector in the vents. Takes 30 seconds so if they charge you 30 Bucks, you'll know that their hourly is far too high.

Thanks
I have a similar problem on my `96,and have been told that the C4 condensors are a weak link in the AC system. As mentioned above, a black light leak detector will tell the story.
Have no flashing LED on the Temp Control Panel.
I know for sure that its not the air mix or temp door sticking or not moving....have already fixed that problem when I had no heat.
Have noticed some kind of "mark" on the hood...will check the compressor for leaks and also all schrader valves and the evap coil for any oily areas.
Changing out the condensor coil....not something I want to do
Thanks for all the info...will start checking Sat morning. Supposed to be 90 on Monday. Summer coming way too fast this year.
