I provided my mechanic with a set of 1" header bolts to install my Hooker Super Comp headers. He told me the bolts were too long... Does this sound right? I thought LT-1 engines used a 1" header bolt?

I wouldn't think so. The only difference between the Hookers and most other C4 headers is that the Hookers have a 5/16" flange and the others a 3/8" flange. I've always used 1" bolts and I don't think that a 1/16" thinner flange is going to require anything shorter. You might want to make sure your mechanic has cleaned and prepared the holes properly if he think's there's a problem.
Did he say they were bottoming out or was he just expressing his opinion? Any time you're threading into aluminum the more threads you have the better it is. I use 1" on my aluminum heads.
I furnished a nice set of Stage 8 locking fasteners to him for the engine/header install. They are part number #8931 for Chevy Small Block. I believe that he either did not want to mess with the locking fasteners of he forgot about them...
These particular fasteners are a 12 point bolt head. I am sending them back to Stage 8 for a exchange for some 6 points. I just wanted to make sure that I received the proper length.
When you are working in tight spaces such as header bolts the 12 point allows you to re-position a wrench better in less space.
ARP has a NASCAR style header bolt out now that has a 12 point 5/16 head on it, much better clearance for a wrench. I use them and they're the best thing since sliced bread.
