Default Headlight question?

, I have a quick question, every once in a while my headlight on my 89 won't come up and lock, more like just the passengers side and most of the time there is no problem at all? Any ideas on what might be happening and how to fix it?

Thanks!

There is a pretty good chance the three plastic bushings insde the motor/gear assembley are going bad. An easy fix!

Hint: Home Depot, Ace, True Value and Lowes all carry bushing that fit (diameter = .49" X length = .43" or 27/64 x 29/64) , are a lot cheaper and you can get them right away without waiting for UPS, FedEx, or the mail.

Change the 3 derelin bushings that serve as a "clutch" for the motor drive. Cheap, easy and simple fix.
If you are not familiar just do a search on this forum.

Could be. Are you hearing a characteristic, THUNKA-THUNKA-THUNKA-THUNKA- THUNK! noise four to six seconds after the door closes? That's another telltale symptom of failed bushings.

Yup. Sounds like bad bushings. As suggested earlier, check out these links and while you're waiting for the parts to arrive...

Is replacing the bushings easy? I saw the step by step to do it, they make it look easy, is it really easy?

See the post above from Wildride, it has a link that not only tells you but shows you how to do it. It took me about two hours to do the first one and about hour and 15 minutes on the second. It's not bad at all.
Both now work smooth and quiet and lock in place. Pay careful attention to the placement of the spacers when you take the motor off. The rest is pretty straight forward. I had never done this before and I followed the links instructions and had no problems. I taped a piece of tape, both vertically and horizontally on the corner of the lid and inside hood to give me a starting point to re-install and align the housing. It was just a starting point but it did help when aligning the gap around the light. Good luck!

If you have glass lens on your head lights that will wear out the plastic bushings quicker, they make lights with plastic lens that are much lighter to help prevent the wear. Gordan K. told us about them at a semminar I can't find the part number but they are ava. at most auto parts stores.

You can buy them online at Mid-America Motorworks (MAM) too.

Plastic Headlights-
They were stock on the 95 and are much lighter than the glass ones. Two plastic units appear to weigh less than one glass unit. I replaced my glass ones with the plastic units and they open much faster so I'm assuming this means a lot less strain on the motor/mechanism. The light output is good and appears the same as the glass.

They were/are made by Wagner and the bar code number is 427223 56054 .
Model : Plastic Halogen HP6054 They are available thru NAPA autoparts.

Even though most of the NAPA stores carry the plastic units, I had a hard time discovering them as the store computer defaults to the glass units so use the info above to find them. They're about $22.00 each

The bushings that are mentioned in these replies are only on 88 and newer motors. 1984-87 are different in design.

True. But he's got an '89 so he's good to go on replacing the bushings.

Was it easier to remove the whole headlight assy and do the bushing replacement or by removing just the motor? I've got to do my passenger side.

Also, I saw these bushing on ebay as well.
