I did not read the whole thread. If you have a factory 1 pc rear main seal shortblock in your car now(86-91) any 1 pc rear main seal shortblock you buy from GM will be neutral balanced damper and ext balanced flexplate(or flywheel if stick car), therfore allowing you to reuse your existing parts. Again, this assumes you already have a 1 pc rear main seal block in the car now.

Maybe the confusion is the crankshaft is internally balanced but after you put the pistons, etc. in you need to externally balance it with the flywheel?

So far I think all posts have been on topic since the question is how to replace a one piece seal block on an L98 - and the 1990 is a perfect reference.

To be safe, I purchased a 22 pound steel flywheel that comes with a weight kit that allows it to be used as neutral or external balance. I am planning on surfacing it .090. Here are the specs:

#
Designed by AMS RACING for Late Crankshaft 4.3 or 350 V-8 can be used with external weight or not.. for internal balance
#
Small diameter flywheel 4340 steel with SFI 1.1 153 tooth design
#
Weight supplied with each flywheel for external balancing..
#
New smoother finish..
# Weight is 22 lbs.. the lightest on the market..

Could someone call their local stateside dealer to determine whether
the L98 shortblock p/n# is active or discontinued.

- #12510735 - L98/L05 350 Short Block Assembly 1 Piece Rear main,
2 Bolt main, Roller Cam Provisions

It comes up as 'Discontinued' in Canada.

I'll give one of the local dealers a call tomorrow. FWIW the guy at Pace said they bought 19 of these blocks from GM. Maybe that was the last batch??

I should have mine this week. I will be taking it apart and having it all balanced. Thanks for the input on that. Better safe than sorry.

The link describes
12513151 - 5.7l (LT1-P) 1991-1993 Chevy Caprice
(Exc. 9C1 Police Package), 1991-1993 Buick Roadmaster,
1991-1993 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham
I understood you to mean that it is the long block version of the
short block L98. But this long block appears to have the iron 23º
heads. Do the two engines share a common SB?

From Pace..."Factory replacement shortblock for the following vehicles:

For 1990 - 1993 Caprice,1990-1993 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham, 1992 - 1993 Buick Roadmaster, 1992 Olds. Custom Cruiser With 5.7L (LO5-7) 1990-1992 Camaro, Firebird & Corvette With 5.7L (L98-8).

Also a great shortblock to build a mild performance engine from!

This is the same shortblock our 12513151 crate engine is built from.

Engine Specs:

* 1986-2000 type 2 bolt main 1 piece crankshaft seal block with factory roller cam provisions

I called the dealership and asked them to check the PN# for the shortblock. He quoted $898 but then retracted that after he saw zero available and discontinued.
